Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is this exactly?
This Much Is True is an intimate night of storytelling that has taken place at The Hopleaf on the second Tuesday of each month since 2009.  In addition to our core group of perfomers, we feature guests from every corner of Chicago's creative community. At any given show, you will hear 7 different true, personal stories. Sometimes they are hilarious, sometimes they are heartbreaking, but they are certainly always memorable.

Q: Is there a cover charge?
A:  The show is free, but you are welcome to contribute to the donation bucket if you are so moved. All of this money goes back into producing storytelling events in Chicago.

Q:  What time should I get to the Hopleaf?
A:  Doors open at 6:45 PM. In order to get a seat for the show, it would be best to arrive as close to this time as possible. However, there is also ample standing room. We will stop admitting patrons once we hit capacity.

Q:  Is food available during the show?
A: Food is not available in the upstairs lounge during the show. However, the kitchen is open from 5-11 on show nights, so dining before or after is always an option.

Q:  How long does the show last?
A:  TMIT runs for about an hour and forty-five minutes, including a ten minute intermission.  We usually begin right around 7:30.

Q:  Is this event “cash only?”
A:  Not anymore!  The Hopleaf now accepts cards of all types in the upstairs lounge.

Q:  Is this a family friendly show?
A:  Hopleaf is an adult venue. Everyone must be 21 or over with valid ID to enter.  As far as content goes, we don't censor our performers, so it is possible that the stories may contain strong language or mature themes.

Q:  How do I get there?
A:  The Clark (#22) and Foster (#92) Buses will take you right to the doorstep, and the Ashland (#9) Bus stops right around the corner.  The closest train stop is the Berwyn Red Line, which is only a few blocks east of the bar.  There is also ample metered street parking available.

Q:  I want to tell a story. How can I do that?
A:  TMIT does not take submissions, but is always on the look out for fresh voices.  We are a curated show put together through scouting, recommendations, and research.  If you are a newer storyteller, Story Lab Chicago is the perfect way to start getting involved.  Also, Do Not Submit, our open mic, is a great place for storytellers of all experience levels to work out new pieces.
