Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the show all about?
This Much Is True is an intimate night of storytelling that has taken place in Chicago once a month since 2009. We feature guests from every corner of Chicago's creative community, and at any given show, you will hear 7 different true, personal stories. They are often hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking, but certainly always memorable. We feature a new cast every month.
Q: Is there a cover charge?
A: The show is 100% free.
Q: What time should I get to the venue?
A: Doors open at 6:30 PM. We can comfortably seat around 95 in the main room, and about 25 in the overflow area. Standing room with limited sight lines is also available. For the best seats, aim to arrive as close to 7 as possible, but we have yet to turn anyone away from this venue.
Q: Are food and drinks available during the show?
A: Food is available in the upstairs lounge, but there are limited tables in our set up. Also, service to the room will stop during the show. However, the kitchen is open from 5 to 10PM on show nights, so dining before or after is always an option. A full bar is available all evening.
Q: How long does the show last?
A: TMIT runs for about an hour and forty-five minutes, including a ten minute intermission. We usually begin right around 7:30.
Q: Is this a family friendly show?
A: Mrs. Murphy & Sons allows minors as long as they are accompanied by parents or guardians. Anyone purchasing an alcoholic beverage will be carded. As far as content goes, we don't censor our performers, so it is possible that the stories may contain strong language or mature themes, but never any hateful or derogatory content. We ask that you use your best judgment in bringing younger children to the show.
Q: How do I get there?
A: The Damen bus (#50) will take you right to the doorstep, and the Irving Park (#80) bus stops a few blocks north. The closest train stop is the Irving Park Brown Line, which is only a five minute walk from the venue. There is a small parking lot for patrons, and also ample metered street parking available.
Q: I want to tell a story. How can I do that?
A: TMIT does not take submissions, but is always on the look out for fresh voices. We are a curated show put together through scouting, recommendations, and research. If you are a newer storyteller, Story Lab Chicago is the perfect way to start getting involved. Also, Do Not Submit, our open mic, is a great place for storytellers of all experience levels to work out new pieces.
Q: Who makes This Much Is True happen?
A: Scott Whitehair is our producer and host. He can be reached at [email protected].
Q: Why do you guys do this?
A: We love stories, and there is no better way to connect with other people. We want to share that with you.
